LEED Platinum, net-zero, carbon neutral: This military medical oasis in the desert sets a precedent for the Military Health System.

Description

RLF led planning and design efforts for a modernized, consolidated replacement hospital with inpatient and outpatient health services to maintain medical readiness. The new facility provides services for 10,000 beneficiaries on a 60-acre rural campus in the Mojave Desert and features panoramic views of the wildlands and the Tiefort Mountains, inspiring some to call the hospital a medical oasis in the desert.

The project team delivered on the client's three-prong goals: a unique design, energy efficiency and an accelerated design pace. The use of LEED rating tools helped RLF surpass sustainability goals to design the DoD’s first LEED Platinum certified hospital. The facility serves as the post's major emergency shelter with the ability to remain fully operational and self-sufficient for up to four days. Efficient workflow and sound teaming efforts enabled the full design delivery in 14 months, which is 40% of a traditional design schedule for a project of this complexity.

Ken Wing

Project Manager, USACE Sacramento District

I consider RLF the best A/E firm I have had the opportunity to work with in my 26 years as a MILCON Project Manager. RLF provided excellent performance on a technically challenging design. The Army directed an accelerated design schedule and RLF met all the delivery milestones. Their entire team was extremely cooperative and responsive throughout the design phase. Their technical expertise in all of the disciplines reflected well in the overall performance of this design.
