This monumental VA medical campus was designed around the patient experience and a large Veteran community.

Description

RLF provided master planning, design and commissioning of a 65-acre medical center that provides care for 400,000 Veterans living in Central Florida. The VAMC serves as a “spoke” team to the Spinal Cord Injury and Disorders System of Care in Tampa, Florida (the “hub”). Every aspect of this massive facility was designed around the patient experience with careful attention to travel distances and wayfinding, safety, functional flexibility, staffing efficiency and sustainability. Infectious disease control, physical security, antiterrorism/force protection and hurricane hardening are all integral to the facility. The master planning effort provides flexibility for future expansion by upwards of 20% without impacting ongoing operations.

The Orlando VAMC is the first VA hospital in the country with all private rooms in its 134-bed tower. The scope of this massive project includes an emergency department, a community living center, chapel, inpatient diagnostic/treatment, outpatient super clinic, drug/alcohol rehab center, long-term care rehab center, laboratory suite with blood donor facility, pharmacy, morgue, dental clinic, domiciliary, freestanding CEP, Veteran’s memorial park and two parking garages.

Sustainability

All facilities were designed to meet or exceed LEED Silver certification, including the CEP. The project was never certified at the decision of the client.

The Orlando VA Medical Center project was a megaproject that changed health care delivery for Veterans in Central Florida. The project spanned over 10 years and there were numerous challenges. RLF worked with a large team both through the joint venture and with the Department of Veterans Affairs. The success of this project is a testament to,the tenacity to 'work through problems as they arise and meet the challenges of planning, designing, constructing and delivering a CLC, Clinic and support for an inpatient hospital on a brand new campus.
