This educational expansion for photonics research supports a growing field with a major economic impact.
Description
This three-story, 14,000 SF addition to the existing CREOL (Center for Research and Education in Optics and Lasers) building supports the University of Central Florida’s rapidly growing research needs. Located on the east side of the existing building along a major student walkway system that circles the campus, the addition was designed to conform to the master plan guidelines of the university to match the existing building aesthetic. The structure is a cast concrete frame with a brick envelope highlighted by a curtainwall feature at a prominent corner of the building. The interior consists primarily of dry laboratory research spaces that will be used for optics research, and each lab’s infrastructure includes provisions for conversion to a wet lab in the future. Research offices line the perimeter along with an open collaboration area for graduate assistants. The main mechanical support spaces are located on the ground floor, which also includes a shelled space for a future lecture auditorium.
