This community destination offers engagement, celebration and organizational spaces while maximizing its connection to its nautical setting.
Description
In response to the growing need for a large event space in the city of New Smyrna, Florida, RLF worked with the City of New Smyrna Beach and key community stakeholders through several public workshops to consider city needs and generate the building program for the Brannon Center civic center. Located in the heart of New Smyrna Beach, the 13,800-square-foot Brannon Center was sited to take advantage of its proximity and connections to both the riverfront and the historic downtown business district. Project inspiration came from the site’s nautical influence. The image of a sail taking form and movement from the wind was a generating concept, inspiring the building’s initial form.
Answering the city’s request for the building to be capable of hosting a wide range of events, the project team designed the spaces for flexibility and functionality. The main 600-seat assembly space features panoramic views of the Indian River and includes operable partitions for multipurpose functionality for a variety of community events. These partitions allow for the building to become a malleable organism that can accommodate a wide variety of functions, from large conventions and 400-table weddings to more intimate lectures and small organizational meetings. This dynamic space is served by a central reception area, catering preparation area, and support spaces. The terrace wraps along the eastern edge of the structure to create a boundary between the water and the building. Space created by the terrace is used as an extension of the ballroom and a gathering space for the community.
Designed in accordance with current Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) requirements to promote energy efficiency, the new single-story civic center offers:
• A 6,500-sq-foot grand ballroom that can be partitioned for smaller events or combined with adjacent multi-use spaces for a combined total of more than 1,850 square feet
• A 340-square-foot catering kitchen
• A 1,950-square-foot lobby
• Administrative offices
• Large restrooms
• An outdoor green space on the south side of the building for viewing outdoor concerts and performances
• A 7,500-square-foot terrace on the east side of the building that maximizes the river viewRLF is proud to have accomplished this unique design within the constraints of a tight budget and schedule, including the requirements of open competitive bidding. The City of New Smyrna Beach has seen significant community engagement with the new facility. In its first full year of operations, use of the Brannon Center increased 72 percent.
